After 6 years, I’ve decided retire the old DataPig Technologies logo.

I’ve used this old logo in one form or another since 2004. I put this logo together myself with some creative cutting and pasting of clipart. It’s a cute logo and it helped in relaying my services. But it definitely looks dated.
For one thing, the Pig is sitting in front of a desktop computer. That doesn’t quite relay “cutting edge technology” anymore. Desktops are disappearing from the corporate world. In a few years it will be difficult to find one anywhere. After a while, it won’t even be clear what the hell this pig is sitting in front of. Also, the Tahoma font is “so last year”. It just looks old and dated.

For the new logo, I put my project out on 99Designs. 99Designs is a service where you explain what you are looking for and what you are willing to pay. Then a community of graphic artists submit designs. The one you pick wins your money. I paid $250 for my logo project.
I really like the new logo. First off, the pig in the logo is represented in an appropriate way. Let me tell you – it ‘s extremely hard to have someone design a pig in a logo and not make it look like a I run a BBQ restaurant. Secondly, the Font used is a contemporary techy font (Segoe UI). In the Italicized state, it looks fast moving and crisp.
Why have a logo at all?
This logo thing isn’t just navel-gazing. I truly believe branding is important.
Although I’m essentially still a one-man shop, I feel that branding my company helps people remember me, and helps differentiate me from the faceless crowd of people selling the same thing I’m selling. Of course, branding can’t guarantee customers, but it definitely helps me pitch my story and what my company is about.
In my opinion, anyone who’s serious about going 100% consulting should have some level of branding built around their business. And no…it doesn’t have to be an animal.
Debra’s Contextures brand is a nice one. The name is easy to say and remember. Plus the logo is simple and relates the meaning of her company name quite well.
That’s my two cents anyway. And two cents is all I’m prepared to give on a Friday afternoon.

I like that exploding pig, with all of the bacon bits flying out his rear end. Already cut up, and ready to eat. And when I saw that Segoe UI font, I thought for a moment that it was 2011 already.
Too bad they spelled “technologies” wrong.

Ha-ha, made you look!!
Just kidding. Nice job, Mike.
Nice. Modern and all that. In a few years retro will be in, and you can dust off the old one.
Mike, the new logo looks very nice. The new font adds a great new dimension to the logo.
The pig kind of resembles the addin icon….so is there a Bacon addin coming up…:-)
>> And no…it doesn’t have to be an animal.
That’s why so many people recognize my logo.
Kind regards,
Dennis
PS: It would have been so very more cool if the pig was designed as the US map. As it is now, it’s close to it but not identical.
The new logo looks great, Mike. It’s the perfect representation of slicing and dicing your data.
Very good logo Mike…
Last time I changed my logo and website name my readers went mad asked for the pointy hair back. I see that you dont have any problems like that. Congratulations…
Nice! I like the fact that you preserved your color scheme. It makes for a smoother transition and retains a great deal of your brand power.
Really like the logo. LOVE the site! Thank you!
