Copy and Paste in the Command Screen

I’ve been having trouble with the site lately. Apparently, this site was being targeted for malware attacks. It looks like someone out there is jealous that I have such an awesome site. All has seemed to be resolved for now.

In any case, while trying to resolve my website woes, I found that I was using the command screen alot. The command screen is the black screen where you can call up a bunch of IP related commands. I noticed that I was using a few command shortcuts for copy and pasting that not everyone may know. So today, we learn a bit about the command screen.

Pasting into the Command Screen

Often, you’ll have to copy some text (like an IP address) and paste it into the command screen. But when you type Ctrl+V in the command screen, you only get characters representing Ctrl and V. The command screen doesn’t know you’re trying to paste.

The trick is to right-click the icon in the upper left-hand corner of the command screen. When you do, you’ll get a context menu that allows you to paste.

Copy from the Command Screen

What if you want to copy from the command screen?

This one is a bit trickier. First, right-click the icon in the upper left-hand corner of the command screen and select Edit -> Mark from the menu.

At this point, you can highlight the characters you need to copy.

Once the text is marked, you can right-click the icon in the upper left-hand corner of the command screen and select Edit -> Copy from the menu.

There you have it. No more retyping IP addresses again!

You’re welcome Excel community….you’re welcome.

  1. It might vary with the OS, but in Vista you can also right-click the window area and get a context menu with those commands.

Also, after marking text just press Enter to copy it.

I forget when I figured that out. But the inability to use the standard keyboard copy/paste commands used to drive me crazy.

I never realized that! Thanks for the tip. I guess old dogs do know new tricks.

My suggestion is to leave your fly open. This will keep the flies out of your face.

You can also paste by right-clicking the command prompt itself, without using the context menu.

Actually you can also copy from the Command Line by just selecting the text you want to copy, and right-click it. Much faster than the context menu!

This is a good tip. Although, I’m pretty sure you couldn’t do this in Windows XP.

It works in XP, but I think you need to check the QuickEdit Mode option box on the options tab of the properties page for the command prompt window.

Why not just use Quick edit mode. Listed under properties of a CMD window. Then you can highlight with left mouse, click with left to copy & then paste with right mouse click. Simple & fun, just like bacon!
