An Interview with Bill Jelen

July 29, 2010 by datapig Leave a reply »

This is the last week of my summer series, the ‘Road of the Excel Bastards’. This series was my take on a series called Road of the Excel Masters started a long time ago by Excel MVP, Colo.

In his series, he would interview Excel gurus, asking them Excel related questions. In my version, I ask questions that have nothing to do with Excel.

Today’s Excel Bastard is Bill Jelen!

Bill is the owner and founder of the Mr. Excel empire. He runs the most successful Excel forum in the world and is the author of lots and lots of books. Ever the showman, it’s not hard to catch Bill doing his “radio voice” for some crowd of Excel groupies. I’ve always said that if Excel was a game show, Bill Jelen would be the host.

Here is my heart-stopping interview with Bill Jelen, Excel Guru.

DataPig: What’s your favorite thing in your refrigerator right now?

Bill: Spicy pickles from Porubsky’s Grocery in Topeka , Kansas.

This is the real owner of Porubsky’s deli – Charlie Porubsky.

I’m guessing he’s owned that pot longer than that beard.

DataPig: Red Shirt or Blue?

Bill: Khaki.

DataPig: How many hats do you have?

Bill: Seven.

DataPig: Who plays your role in a movie about Excel?

Bill: Mike Alexander

DataPig: Which Superpower do you want: Invisibility, Flight, Strength, or Mind Reading?

Bill: Invisibility.

Here’s invisible Bill relaxing at home in his favorite khaki shirt.

DataPig: What’s the title of your autobiography?

Bill: Gainfully Unemployed.

DataPig: Who do you like better, Tom or Jerry?

Bill: Jerry.

DataPig: What’s the most important part of the sandwich?

Bill: The mustard.

This guy thinks so too.

DataPig: What’s the Best thing you ever ate?

Bill: Baron’s Pepper Sauce in St. Lucia.

DataPig: What’s the Worst thing you ever ate?

Bill: Pepper sauce in Trinidad.

  1. Bill seems to be a man of few words.

Answering “khaki” to the shirt question floored me. There’s a photo on the web that shows him wearing a blue shirt.

I wonder how credible his other answers are?

  2. datapig says:

Jelen is anything but a man of few words.
